Workman set up a job on the newly installed 42-foot vertical boring mill at General Electric Company's Schenectady Works. One of the largest known removable rail type mils ever built, this unit is erected in one of the buildings of the Large Motor and Generator Department. As the mill will handle large jobs up to 42 feet in diameter, the set up must ne accomplished by skilled workmen in order to remove with hair-like accuracy shavings of tough, high-quality steel. The mill has a heavy table, measuring 20 feet in diameter and a removable cross-rail weighing 70 tons. Powered by a 100-hp d-c drive motor, the mill is used by GE to machine hydro-generator stator frames and bearing brackets assemblies
