World on its Hind Legs, a creation born from the creative union of Kentridge and his perennial collaborator
Gerhard Marx, emerges as a public spectacle that defies the bounds of ordinary perception. Inspired by
Kentridge's poignant sketches for an Italian publication during the tumultuous invasion of Abyssinia, this
sculpture transcends mere representation. The genesis of this sculpture lies in humble materials- torn sheets of paper and cardboard fashioned into a maquette, their fragmented essence echoing through the finished form.
Though the world strides forth with an air of strength and resolve, its true essence reveals itself only to those who dare to view it from specific angles. From these privileged perspectives, the illusion shatters, unveiling the delicate dance of balance that sustains our reality. Like a puppeteer's delicate strings, unseen forces bind the world together, their fragility a testament to the precarious nature of existence.
