Frans Francken II belonged to a family of artists that produced numerous painters. His paintings were chiefly of art galleries, but also included religious scenes, such as that depicted here. In the foreground, the Israelites are depositing their silver vessels and jewels at Aaron’s feet. In the distance, they are dancing around the column bearing the golden calf. Above left, Moses is descending from Mount Sinai in company with Joshua; in despair, he smashes the Tablets of the Law.
