Wrapping Cloth

Late 17th century

Sadberk Hanım Museum

Sadberk Hanım Museum
İstanbul, Türkiye

The square wrapping cloth is embroidered with an infinitely repeating design of stylised tulips and pomegranates, which are motifs from the classical Ottoman repertoire of decorative art. The design does not surround the centre point. Only one complete composition of a large pomegranate motif encircled by tulips fits into the field; the others are cut off by the border. The ground is filled with small leaves and buds springing from the main motifs. The border consists of small pomegranate and tulip motifs arranged alternately on an undulating branch. The main motifs are couched and all the motifs are outlined in black contour stitch.
