The seven panels in this series, illustrating writing accessories, form a continuous composition linked by the gold screen in the background, which is decorated with paintings and poems by members of the commissioning Katsushika Group. The poems refer to lacquer objects or techniques of lacquer production; the series and picture titles were printed in gold on black in imitation of lacquer.
