larapuna is the homeland of the palawa peoples who are the the First Nations peoples of lutruwita (Tasmania). It is situated in the Mount William National Park in the north east region of the island and marks the most northern tip of the Bay of Fires region. The Bay of Fires is known for its clean white beaches, blue water andd granite rocks splashed with orange lichen and is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations.
The words palawa and pakana both mean First Nations person or people of lutruwita. The words originally come from two different language groups and are interchangeable: palawa is a southern word while pakana is from the north of lutruwita. Each Aboriginal community member chooses how they wish to individually identify.
