Under the direction of famed New Orleans banjoist Danny Barker, Wynton joined the Fairview Baptist Church Band. It would be the start of his education in the world of traditional New Orleans jazz and brass band music. Wynton (far left) has his head bowed in concentration over his trumpet. Herlin Riley, now a jazz drummer, began his musical journey playing the trumpet. He is pictured here in the center foreground.
