Min Xiwen born in Changshu, Jiangsu province. In 1935, heentered National Academy of Art and became a student of Wu Dayu, Fang Ganmin, and Cai Weilian. After graduation, he stayed on to teach at the college. In 1948, Min assisted Fang in founding the Chinese Art Study Association in Shanghai. In 1953, he started to teach in the Department of Stage Design of the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Highly influenced by Western impressionism, Min’s works were original in the portrait of changes in light and colour. He held solo exhibitions in the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, 1987, and 1990.
