XP-38 Prototype After Crash

The wrecked prototype Lockheed XP-38 Lightning on the ground at Cold Stream Golf Course just short of Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York, February 11, 1939. Pilot Lt. Benjamin S. Kelsey (center, back to camera), was in the process of completing a coast-to-coast flight when engine failure forced him to land. (NASM 9A17793)
