PROGRESS ON THE ENGLISH "ABADAM"
1932
The great new oil refinery of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, with a projected capacity of 4,000,000 tons a year, is taking shape. It is due for completion in the summer of next year, but the Crudo Oil Distillation Plant and its necessary auxiliaries are expected to be in commission in a few months. Situated at the Isle of Grain, on the Kent coast, the new refinery will cost £40,000,000, and its output will be about one-sixth of the Abadan refinery. It is being constructed on reclaimed marshland on which a million tons of and from the sea bed off the Nore have book pumped in order to stop the natural sinking of the land, and to prevent the sand drifting, a mixture of grass and clover has been planted. New jetties are under construction to accommodate the largest of tankers, and there will be 160 storage tanks.
