Magnus Enckell arrived in Paris in the spring of 1891. He studied at the Académie Julian and was caught up in the fashionable trend of the time, Symbolism. Enckell felt right at home amidst the great questions of humanity that characterised Symbolism. His own self-esteem was shaky, and he wanted an answer to "Who am I?" or "What am I?"
