Australian Museum

Australian Museum
Sydney, Australia

Yanjirlpirri is the Warlpiri name for stars and also a small hill to the west of Yuendumu, where there is a water soakage. The hill is an extremely important place where young boys are brought from hundreds of kilometres away to be initiated. Otto's painting also shows other related places and stories, including the warngarla (crows) that flock around the desert oaks near Yuendumu, and the ngalyipi (snake vine) used to make objects for ceremonies.
