Yannick Noah was the first French player to win the French Open since Marcel Bernard 37 years earlier, in a historic victory in 1983. Noah defeated the defending champion Mats Wilander to earn his only major singles title. His victory would also mark the last time a man won a singles major with a wooden racquet.
