Yara Shahidi (born 2000) is an actor and activist. She founded Eighteen x 18 to encourage young people to vote in the 2018 congressional election 2018—the year she cast her first ballot.
As a baby, Shahidi appeared in advertisements with her mother. At age seven, she began acting in films and television. She is best known for her role on the television comedy Black-ish and its spin-off series Grown-ish.
Shahidi has participated in panel discussions with well-known politicians, including Hillary Clinton. Michelle Obama wrote her a recommendation for Harvard (she got in). Oprah Winfrey once called her one of the “most profound 17-year-olds alive.”
