Yellow Field

Vincent Leow (1961) has carved out an important role in Singapore's contemporary art development. He works in a wide range of genres, �from performances, installations and sculptures, to digital and mixed-media works. One of the early members of The Artists Village, founded in 1988, Leow's art has been about emphasizing the process in art where he constantly challenges how people consume and understand art; either through playful or antagonistic means. His role as an educator has also inspired today's generation of young contemporary artists who are interested in works of a similar vein. '�Yellow Field' is one of Leow's earliest works in which he made a marked change of direction in his artistic practice from his foundational training in painting. 'Yellow Field', a painting which has rich textural surface of classical landscape encapsulates this entire series of exploration by evolving and merging, on the surface of the canvas, both the still-life and landscape painting genre. Here, a subtle representation of the t-shirt under the genre of still-life is stretched to become a runway landscape. The work is significant, not only because it is one of his earlier works, but also one of the few pieces which is monumental.
