As the first step toward the annihilation, from 5 April 1944, every Jewish person above the age of six was compelled to wear a 10x10 centimeter yellow six-pointed star sewn to the left side of her/his clothing. Many Jews were arrested on the ground that their star was not of the proper size or shade, or because of the way it was sewn. The later was checked by thrusting – forcing – a pencil between the stitches, and if the “control tool” found its way, the bearer of the star was interned immediately.
