Yereed' by Lina Ghalib draws its inspiration from freshly cut palm mid-ribs, originally used for seating, tables and livestock cages and pens. The palm rib ('yereed' in Arabic) is historically viewed as a utilitarian building material that forms part of the architectural typology of the Emirates. The limited edition bench cultivates and reclaims palm tree branches, which are shed seasonally in the UAE. Normally treated as waste, the designer turns this into a hardwood material structurally sound enough to create contemporary furniture. By peeling, cutting, scoring and puncturing, Lina Ghalib has created a new material PlyPalm that offers new sustainable design possibilities for the region.
