The well-known toy company of Ives, Blakeslee, and Williams produced this cast-iron firehouse around 1893. The toy's mechanical action emphasized the speed with which real fire fighters responded to fires. When the wind-up mechanism behind the double doors engages, the toy sounds the bell, the doors unlatch and swing open, and the horse-drawn pumper wagon rolls out of the firehouse.
