The word ‘yoni’ means womb. In yoga and Indian philosophical thought, the yoni is symbolically the divine womb (Brahmayoni) or the cosmic golden womb (Hiranyagarbha) from which the entire cosmic universe has emerged.
Yoni Mudra enables sense withdrawal. The senses which are normally directed towards the world are directed inwards to experience the universe within.
-Sit in Sukhasana.
-Place your thumbs on the tragus (the tiny flap at the entry of ear canal on the anterior side).
-Gently press inwards closing your ear canal.
-Place your index fingers lightly on your closed lashes.
-Now put your middle fingers lightly on the outside of your nostrils, the ring fingers above your upper lip and little fingers below your lower lip/chin.
-Ensure that your elbows are parallel to the ground. Concentrate on your breath or listen to the sounds within your body while in this mudra.
-Stay in this mudra for at least 5 to 10 minutes.
Yoni Mudra is a psycho-physical technique that helps your mind to withdraw its senses from being outwards and reduces the unnecessary chattering of your mind to provide that pause needed for a change of perception.
