These carrot twists get their name from the fact that they resemble multiple threads with a twist (yori) to form a single rope. The saying "ude ni yori o kakeru" (meaning to apply all of one's skill to a task, or literally "to twist one's arm") similarly comes from the image of flexing one's arm before making a serious effort.
