York Castle, York, North Yorkshire

York Castle was originally a Norman motte and bailey, built between the Rivers Ouse and Foss. In the 13th century stone defences were built around the bailey and the keep, known as Clifford's Tower, rebuilt in stone. It later became the site of law courts and prisons.
