The motive “Naniwa fuzoku” – depictions of manners and customs of Naniwa – is widely considered to be synonymous with Japanese-style painter Tatehiko Suga. Yotsubashi is a collective name referring to a construct of four bridges arranged in a square across the point where the Nagahori and Nishiyokobori Rivers meet. A landfill today, the intersection of rivers used to be a famous spot in Osaka, and important as a hub for road, water and railway traffic. Suga depicts in warm brushstrokes the bustle of street stalls and people traveling through this urban oasis for Osaka citizens.
