One of the pioneers of American photography, Jeremiah Gurney took up the daguerreotype in 1840 and operated one of the leading studios in New York City for several decades. He was widely regarded as a technical master of the daguerreotype. The exquisite artistry of this girl’s pose and the silvery luminescence of the plate itself make this one of the most remarkable works of its time.
