The main theme of Altdorfer’s playful pen drawings is the unity of human beings and nature. This sheet shows a girlish saint next to a tree in front of a distant landscape. She is standing over an extremely foreshortened figure. Like the conquered dragons in depictions of Saint George or Saint Michael, the devil seems like a laughable figure—as helpless as a beetle on its back.

- Artist Biography: Altdorfer is considered the inventor of the autonomous landscape painting and the major exponent of the Danube school, characterized by its particular interest in depicting nature and coloristic effects. The artist, who probably trained with his father, was probably schooled on miniature painting and the works of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Along with Albrecht Dürer and others, Altdorfer was repeatedly active for Emperor Maximilian I from 1512 onward.
