This tintype photograph comes from Lester-Gray Collection of Documents Relating to Joseph Glover Baldwin, 1838-1949. Baldwin was born in Virginia and lived in Alabama from 1836 to 1854. He then moved to California where he became a Justice for the California Supreme Court. These photographs were part of an album titled "Negroes, born and Bred on Gen. Lee's Land, 1862," but the 17 images in the album appear to date from 1880 to 1900, and there is no direct evidence of a connection to Robert E. Lee.
