John Jack recorded the effects of forest fires on land that had been logged and then burned in 1893. The hillisde was originally covered with firs, hemlocks, larches, birches (Abies, Tsuga, Larix, Betula), oak, and other trees. There was some sprout growth but the ground cover was mostly dwarf bamboo (Japanese name Kumasasa). In Yumoto, Japan, August 11, 1905. The man in the photograph was a student from the University of Tokyo who accompanied Jack on the Japanese leg of his trip as a translator.
