Pradhan says he fell in love with the engines when he would bring food for his father, a carpenter with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, to the Tin Dharia workshop. His dream of working with Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was realised in 1989 when he joined the Darjeeling railway after a three-year stint as an apprentice in the North East Frontier Railway in Assam.
