In this work, Glenferrie railway station is seen from the adjacent Swinburne College. The station was rebuilt in 1918, when the railway line was regraded and elevated over Glenferrie Road.

This painting is one of several by Plante with railways as their subject; another depicting Darebin railway station, close to Plante's home, is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.

  • A.E. Ferris: Ada May Plante was born in New Zealand and immigrated to Australia in 1888. She initially studied at the National Gallery Art School under Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall between 1894 and 1899. Plante then travelled to Europe, studying first in England and later at the Academie Julian in Paris. Her interest in post-impressionist painting most probably began at this time and continued in Melbourne through her connection with artists from the George Bell School. A talented painter, and one of the first to embrace modernism, Plante's later works were highly praised by her contemporaries. For many years she lived at the Darebin Bridge House near Heidelberg.
