During his life, Lou Zamperini was chosen as torchbearer in five Olympic Games. 81 years old, in 1998 he carried the Olympic torch at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. In view of the occasion he publicy forgave Watanabe, the jailor responsible for the tortures to which Zamperini was subjected during his imprisonment in Japan.
