Born in Bombay, India, in 1936, Zubin Mehta inherited his obsession for music from his father, Mehli Mehta, a violinist who founded the Bombay Symphony. Highly sought after as a guest conductor, Mehta has led major orchestras and opera companies worldwide and is considered one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the great symphonic literature. During his tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Mehta expanded the orchestra’s repertoire by including more 20th century classics as well as introducing works by living composers. Mehta’s commercial recording contract ushered in a new period of international visibility for the orchestra through the worldwide availability of high quality recordings. In the fall of 1967, Zubin Mehta led the orchestra on a worldwide tour including Europe, India, Iran, and the Soviet Eastern Block.
