Zucche brings the social, political, and economic contexts of Europe and America into dialogue through its imagery: the pumpkins evoke the idea of fertility and abundance while, at the same time, they are the end of the old and the beginning of a new cycle of seasons. Using symbolism to convey a message was not uncommon for Gilardi, specifically in his Tappeto-Natura works.
