Albertina Montenuovo Sanvitale's portrait

Parma School1833

Fondazione Museo Glauco Lombardi

Fondazione Museo Glauco Lombardi
Parma, Italy

On the back of the frame there is an oval silver medal depicting the Immaculate Conception with a German inscription, dated 1830. While the portrait, already ascribed without sufficient historical or stylistic reasons to the English painter George Hayter (1792-1871), is more likely to attribute to an artist from Parma in connection with the ducal court. The setting is reminiscent of some female portraits by Paolo Toschi. The work was perhaps part of the "portraits of Countess Albertina Sanvitale ... done in pencil or in painting" that Maria Luigia left to her son Guglielmo in the will of 1844 (codicil 54).
