The second tapestry from «The New Indies» series also decorates the Upper Throne Hall of Paul I.
Cartoons for the series were drawn in the 1730s by the outstanding French painter François Desportes (1661-1743) and were based on earlier «The Indies» series, which was created in the second half of 17th century for Louis XIV, King of France.
The scenes of «The New Indies» series expressively and colourfully depict the exotic nature of the West Indies and the times of Latin America colonization.
The Gatchina Palace is the only museum in Russia that keeps tapestries from the legendary «The New Indies» series.
