Georg Wichmann was a famous Lower Silesian landscape artist called "the painter of the Karkonosze Mountains", and he also occasionally created still lifes and portraits. He often went on mountain trips, during which most of his paintings were created. He liked to come back to characteristic points in the Karkonosze Mountains and paint them at different times of the day and year. One of such favorite places was Śnieżne Kotły (literally Snow Cauldrons). This painting is one of the earlier paintings in which the influence of academic painting is still visible. With time, Wichmann's paintings gained more and more dynamics and their colors corresponded to impressionist painting.
