‘HMS Powerful’ at the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock, 1890s

Thanks to its location, Hong Kong became a hub for shipbuilding and ship repairs. Some of the earliest workshops could be found in today’s areas of Ap Lei Chau, Wan Chai, Tai O and Sham Shui Po. Whampoa Dock Company developed an outstanding reputation and was known for having the best shipyard facilities in the world.
