The characters on this poster, called “Kewpies,” helped to convey the innocence of the women's suffrage cause—and make it seem non-threatening. In the words of their creator, Rose O’Neill, a Kewpie is “a benevolent elf who [does] good deeds in a funny way.” O’Neill developed the charcter in 1909, and as a suffragist, she designed posters and postcards to support the cause.
