“Let Iowa Women Vote” handheld flag

This flag represents one of the many items produced during Iowa’s long struggle for the vote. In 1868, Iowans voted to remove the word “white” from their constitution’s voter qualifications—leading women to believe they’d be next. However, the General Assembly rejected a resolution in 1872 that would have opened up the vote to women.
