“The Chinese Dance” and its companion piece “The Chinese Garden” were woven in the workshop of Jean-François Picon from preparatory sketches (“cartoons”) by the painter Jean-Joseph Dumons (1687-1779). They were inspired by the “Tenture Chinoise” tapestry series commissioned from François Boucher by the Beauvais factory. Comte Moïse de Camondo inherited them from his father.
