Félix Philippoteaux, best known as a history painter, contributed to the decoration of the history galleries at the Château de Versailles, inaugurated in 1837. This work is his copy of a vibrant gouache by Louis Carrogis, known as Carmontelle (1717-1806), showing six gentlemen dressed in red frock coats and black stockings – the country dress of the House of Orléans. The figures, from left to right, are the Chevalier de Gax, the Marquis de Périgny, the Chevalier de Saint-Mars, the Chevalier d’Estrées, the Baron de Tourempé and the Chevalier Desparts. This painting came from the 1931 sale of the Duc de Vendôme.
