“The Return of Odysseus” was staged by Tadeusz Kantor in 1944, in German-occupied Krakow. The opening night took place in Magdalena Stryjeńska’s private apartment at 3 Grabowskiego Street. Preparing the performance required tremendous courage and sacrifices because of strict control and repression on the part of the occupying forces. Constant threat and catastrophic circumstances in which he was forced to create left its mark on Kantor’s later work. In the photo: suitors and Melanto in a dance scene.
