This cartoon, printed before the 1948 Presidential election, shows Progressive Party candidate Henry Wallace "flip-flopping"--that is, changing positions--on defense policy. As Vice President during World War II, Wallace staunchly defended military preparedness as a deterrent to war. In 1948, he changed his position and argued that military preparedness would not prevent confrontation. Running as the peace candidate in these early years of the Cold War, Wallace earned no electoral votes and less than three percent of the popular vote.
