The much restored statue depicts Hermaphroditus, a hermaphrodite with female breasts and male genitalia. As mythical son of Hermes and Aphrodite, he embodies the principle of the instability of sexual identity and intersexual beauty. On his head he wears the mithra, a women’s scarf.
