Haniwa: Man playing a drum

The history of the taiko drum can be traced as far back as the Jōmon Period (14,000 -300 BCE). Haniwa is a burial mound terracotta figurine. This is a 6th-century example. In antiquity a drum was used primarily for ceremonial purposes, rather than for entertainment.
