The traditional Chinese couching stitches were used for the endless knots, ruyi-shaped clouds and round longevity patterns on this pouch. In couching stitches two strand of threads are often used. The thicker one is known as “pattern thread” which is used for creating motifs while the thinner one as “fixing thread” for fixing the pattern threads onto the fabric. Couching stitches are usually adopted for abstract floral or animal pattern, and sometimes for fixing or beautifying the hem. Using silver/gold threads as the pattern thread and red/yellow silk floss as fixing thread to make evenly- and densely-arranged stitches, the crafter created visually appealing patterns with his/her ingenious embroidery skills.
