It is believed that the universe was born 13.8 billion years ago from now. After the sudden expansion (inflation) occurred immediately after that, elementary particles etc were born through a big explosion called the big bang. After that, elementary particles made atoms, which made up molecules, eventually creating stars and galaxies, and as a result we arrived at the present universe.
