Gaebyeok is generally classified as a magazine of Chondogyo (Religion of the Heavenly Way), an indigenous Korean religion. However, the first issue does not have much religious content. Of course, some articles include religious content such as a “Study on Innaecheon (The Heavens Within),” but more articles have non-religious content. The most frequently used word is, surprisingly, “reconstruction.” This is understandable, considering the social atmosphere of the time when the hasty pursuit and blind praise of modernization was commonplace. Still, the word stands out in the first issue of Gaebyeok.
