Miser’s purses were known by a variety of names, including stocking purses, wallet purses and long purses. After about 1850 they came to be known simply as purses. This tubular example has a slit at one end through which items can be placed inside. The rings, or ‘sliders’, are pushed up against the contents to close off the slit and keep them secure.
