This photograph shows Second Lady Pat Nixon, wife of U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon, visiting an orphanage in 1953.
The costs of running these facilities were largely funded by U.S. aid. In addition to material support, the U.S. established dozens of orphanages through organizations such as the Korean Civil Assistance Command (KCAC) and civilian religious foundations.
