These are fishing tools used by female divers. Mangsil is also called mangsiri or mangsari, and taewak is also written as tewak. Sometimes mangsil and taewak are combined and called taewak mangsari. Mangsil is a net used for storing the fish and shellfish caught by divers while diving or swimming, and taewak is a buoy that kept mangsil afloat. Mangsil was woven loosely out of twine and had a rimmed mouth to prevent it from moving wobbly in the water. Taewak was made of a gourd and attached to mangsil by rope. As gourd-made taewak was not durable, styrofoam is favored as the material for producing taewak in the present day.
