Baneulgip, also called chimnang or baneulgyeore, is a needle pouch used for safely storing needles. Though needles were often kept threaded and stuck into a spool, a needle pouch was commonly used for safety. As needles were frequently used, women used the pouch to keep needles ready for use. The pouch was varied in material and shape, and was adorned with knots and tassels, making it a fashion accessory for women. While most pouches were made of excess cloth, some were made of the black horn of a water buffalo or metal such as silver and nickel, and others were made of embroidered silk. The needle pouch shown here is made of nickel, and consists of an upper part and a lower part. Needles are stuck into the lower part stuffed with hair, which prevents needles from rusting, and the upper part serves as the cover. Charms in the shape of traditional socks, an ax, and fish dangle from the pouch. This needle pouch seems to have been worn like a pendant, and its body and cover are connected with a string.
